Tom Richard | Artist Statement

Tom Richard is a painter who is currently continuing four series of mixed media pieces on paper and other surfaces, which combine images of toys with philosophical and pop culture quotes. In larger more complex pieces, a multitude of imagery and quotations appear. In smaller pieces a single toy is juxtaposed with one quote (or line) or another surface (which usually depicts a situation of non-linear systems).

He has exhibited his artwork in varied locations, including solo and group exhibitions in New York City, San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago and Little Rock. Richard has been chosen by jurors around the country for special recognition in national and regional exhibitions, and has recently had solo exhibitions at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, AR, Northwestern State – University of Louisiana, in Natchitoches, LA, Baton Rouge Gallery – Center for Contemporary Art in Baton Rouge, LA, and the Laredo Center for the Arts in Laredo, TX.

He was born and raised in Houma, Louisiana and currently lives in Monticello, Arkansas where he is a Professor of Art at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He received a BFA from Louisiana State University in 1988 and earned his MFA at the State University of New York in Albany in 1993.
