Sam Provenza | Artist Statement

Provenza's Points Studies are a series of sculptures that engage the viewer.  Each piece pulls in the viewer for further examination leading to an appreciation of the complexity.  The dynamics of the pieces encourage observation from various viewpoints.  His sculpture composition and aesthetic quality drastically change depending on where the viewer is experiencing the piece.  Provenza’s body of work incorporates form and the relationship to itself.  Working within combinations of material and form, Provenza strives to create harmony in an object.  The harmony is the vital component of the piece and the element that draws viewers to a specic sculpture.

Provenza develops his Point Studies by using high end fabrication techniques.  Each point is turned utilizing a metal lathe to form the uniqueness found in each sculpture.  The bends are created through the use of -oor benders, other manual benders, and hand techniques.  He uses a traditional welding execution to compose and construct his sculptures.  Provenza works back and forth between the three methods until the piece takes its full form.  Through observation, details begin to emerge and the object can truly be appreciated. Provenza aims to engage the viewer in order to establish a real connection to the work. The interaction with a piece is a source of inspiration for his work.
